Call for submissions: Translational Proof of Concept Funding

Date: May 13, 2016

£100,000 support for up to 5 projects to accelerate exciting innovations that support the lives of people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions

A second medical technologies translational proof of concept funding call is being launched in a partnership between Arthritis Research UK and the Medical Technologies Innovation (IKC) and Knowledge Centre to accelerate the commercial development of treatments and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.

Arthritis Research UK, the biggest funder of research into the cause, treatment and cure of all forms of arthritis in the UK, and the Medical Technologies IKC, have joined together to offer funding and project management support to progress translational research projects with commercial potential.

The Translational Proof of Concept Awards will provide £100,000 support for up to 5 projects to accelerate exciting innovations that support the lives of people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Awards will be accepted from scientists and clinicians in UK universities, and will be judged on the clinical need, potential market opportunity and industry confidence to progress and support the technology to market.

The charity has joined forces with the national Medical Technologies Innovation and Knowledge Centre to access expertise in product development, speeding up route to market and reducing the risk of late stage failure and will fund projects that develop:

  • Medical devices
  • Orthotics
  • Implantable therapeutic delivery
  • Imaging

Funding is intended to support Proof of Concept projects with the aim to advance technologies to be ready for further investment and product development by industry, thereby reducing the risk for future investment or license to a third party.
